Self-portrait of Jake Perusich, the photographer behind Nox Velum, raising a Nikon film camera in red and blue light

Behind the veil

I'm Jake Perusich. I built Nox Velum to meet like-minded creatives around Minnesota, Iowa and South Dakota, and to share my work my own way.

My photography comes down to one idea: the person in front of the camera should walk away feeling powerful and seen, because they helped decide how they're shown.

Everyone involved has full creative agency, whether they're modeling, painting, styling or holding the camera. We bring our ideas to the table, work them out together, and agree openly on how the images get used before anything is shared.

What the Light Reveals

You don't have an Instagram?

No, my account is deleted.

For too long, Instagram dominated my creative process. It got into what I shot, what I chose to share and how I felt about the work afterward. I could talk about creative freedom all I wanted, but I was still answering to an app, and it felt constraining.

What I'm looking for now is more creative freedom. Sharing work this way is slower, and fewer people will stumble onto it, but I get to make what I want and show it the way I want.

If something here moves you, I'd really like to hear about it: get in touch, or if you're a model or artist in Minnesota, Iowa or South Dakota, read the model call.
